MRL vs. Traction Elevators
There are primarily two main types of elevators: hydraulic and traction. Within the traction category, there are two primary sub-types: machine room less (MRL) and conventional.
Hydraulic Elevators
Hydraulic elevators use a piston and fluid to lift the elevator car. They are typically used in low-rise buildings due to limitations in speed and height. While often less expensive to install and maintain, they are generally less efficient and can be noisier than other types.

Traction Elevators
Traction elevators use steel cables to lift the elevator car. They are more common in high-rise buildings due to their ability to travel at higher speeds and reach greater heights.
- Machine Room Less (MRL) Traction Elevators: As the name suggests, these elevators do not require a dedicated machine room, saving space. They are ideal for modern buildings where space is a premium.
- Conventional Traction Elevators: These elevators require a separate machine room to house the elevator machinery. They are typically used in taller buildings and offer higher capacity and speed compared to MRL elevators.
